This Spring, with the world grappling with the onset of the Coronavirus crisis and the UK beginning to lock down, we decided to pause operations at Terrain Clothing HQ and join the “volunteer army” making scrubs and face shields for the NHS and other front-line workers.
The idea came about at the end of March when watching the news we realised there was a huge need for additional equipment and supplies in hospitals, care homes and other facilities. Having recently launched our bespoke mountain biking jersey, the OriginMTB, we were well set up with cutters, sewing machines and overlockers as well as our own 3D printer. With a bit of re-jigging of equipment and software we could seamlessly (ahem) switch over our production. We took the decision to shut our business for April but volunteer our time, skills and machinery to produce and donate some much needed supplies.
The initial challenge was to raise funds for the materials. Natasha started a ‘Go Fund Me’ campaign and quickly raised what was needed to buy fabric and thread for scrubs and 3D printer filament, elastic and visor screens for face shields. Once the materials were ordered and on the way, work began creating, drafting and testing our scrubs pattern, loading it into our software ready for cutting and advertising our offerings locally. As our specialisation is in made-to-measure, made-to-order clothing, we decided to build a customisable leg length feature, like you commonly see when buying jeans, into our design to improve the fit; no trailling legs, baggy turn-ups or ankle swingers here! For the face shields we settled on using a design by Prusa, with some modifications for optimisation.
By the end of the first week of April we were up and running with our first orders in production and we have seen a steady flow of orders ever since. The feedback we have received has been very positive and it is a privilege to be manufacturing and donating such important equipment at such a difficult time. Of course, we would not have been able to do this without our wonderful friends and supporters, so a big and heartfelt THANK YOU to each and every one of you!
When the lockdown lifts and the UK begins transitioning into the new normal, we are looking forward to getting back to our core business of making high quality, bespoke mountain biking clothing and are excited to have some new products in the pipeline for release in the coming months.
EDIT: As of May 2020, new government guidelines have lead us to cease production of face shields.
